7 ideas for a church newsletter people actually read

Simple ways to make your weekly update something members look forward to.

Church volunteers packing food together

The best church newsletters feel like a note from a friend. Here are seven ideas to make yours one people open every week.

1. Lead with one story

Open with a single person or moment from the week: a baptism, a volunteer, an answered prayer. Stories get read; lists get skimmed.

2. Keep announcements short

One line each, with a link for details. Readers can always click for more.

3. Write the subject line last

Name the most interesting thing inside. "Pastor's surprise, food drive Saturday" beats "Weekly Newsletter #42."

4. Check it on a phone

Most members read on their phones. Large text and big buttons help everyone, especially older readers.

5. Add one clear next step

Sign up to serve, RSVP, or give. One main button works better than five.

6. Send at the same time each week

A steady rhythm builds the habit of opening.

7. Say thank you

Thank volunteers and givers by name (with permission). Gratitude is the most-read section of many newsletters.
